Starting from a concept, not a brief
Most AI film work starts with constraints — a client’s story, a brand’s history, an artist’s likeness. Zarafel started with none of that: just an idea for a cinematic AI short film and a blank slate to build a visual world into. That freedom is its own challenge. Without an existing reference to anchor decisions, every choice about atmosphere, character and setting has to be made and then held consistent by the production itself.
Establishing atmosphere before character
For an original piece, atmosphere gets decided first — the mood, the tone, the visual language a world runs on — because everything else, including how the character is designed, follows from it. Character in Zarafel was built to belong to its world, rather than a world built around a pre-decided character.
Keeping the world visually coherent scene to scene
The same continuity discipline that holds a character consistent across scenes was applied to the world itself in Zarafel — lighting logic, color language and environmental rules established early and carried through every scene, so a viewer reads it as one continuous place rather than a sequence of separately-generated images.
Animation and pacing decisions
Bringing a world to life through animation and pacing is where a short film distinguishes itself from a static generated gallery — camera movement, the rhythm of cuts, and how long the film holds on a moment all become the tools that make the world feel inhabited rather than illustrated.
