“AI filmmaking” is often described as if it were a single button — type a prompt, get a film. In practice it’s a production pipeline with the same stages as any other filmmaking process, just with different tools at each step. Here is what actually happens between a brief and a finished cut.
1. Creative direction and script
Every project starts the same way a traditional film would: a story, a visual concept, a tone reference. This stage sets the rules the rest of the pipeline has to follow — character design, world, color palette, pacing.
2. Visual development and reference building
Before any shot is generated, the studio builds a visual bible — character sheets, environment references, lighting studies — so every later generation pass has something consistent to match against. Skipping this step is the single biggest cause of AI video that looks disjointed from scene to scene.
3. Shot generation
Individual shots are generated against the established references, often through many iterations per shot to get framing, motion and performance right. This is the most technical stage but also the most similar to traditional coverage: a scene is broken into shots the way a director would block a set.
4. Editing, grading and sound
Generated shots are cut together, graded for a consistent look, and scored — exactly as in traditional post-production. This is where a film actually gets its rhythm; nothing about it changes because the underlying footage was generated rather than shot.
5. Review and delivery
