AI VFX vs Traditional CGI: Choosing the Right Tool per Shot

AI VFX vs Traditional CGI: Choosing the Right Tool per Shot

Zarafel AI visual effects sequence frame: the glowing, cracked relic on a desk in a lamplit room

Short answer: it is rarely one or the other. Generative AI is fast for look development, environments, atmosphere and one-off shots where some variation is acceptable. Traditional CGI wins where exact control, repeatability and precise camera moves matter, hero objects, product shots, long moving shots with many revisions. Strong productions decide per shot and often combine both.

Where AI VFX is strong

  • Designing looks and exploring options quickly.
  • Backgrounds, skies, set extensions and atmosphere.
  • Stylised or dreamlike imagery where perfect physics is not the point.
  • Short shots with limited camera movement.

Where traditional CGI is strong

  • An object or product that must look identical in every shot.
  • Complex camera moves that need exact parallax.
  • Shots that go through many rounds of precise client changes.
  • Simulations that must follow physics exactly.

Hybrid pipelines

A common pattern: CGI provides geometry, camera and layout; generative tools provide textures, detail and atmosphere; compositing joins them with the live-action plate. Each tool does what it is reliable at.

How to decide

Ask per shot: how exact must it be, how much will it change, and how long is it on screen? The answers usually point clearly one way. See our AI VFX page.

Frequently asked questions

Is AI VFX replacing CGI?

No. It is replacing some tasks and speeding up others. Precise, repeatable and heavily revised shots still favour traditional CGI.

Is AI VFX cheaper than CGI?

Often for environments, atmosphere and one-off shots. For exact, repeatable assets CGI can be more economical over many revisions.

Can both be used in one project?

Yes. Hybrid pipelines are common and usually give the best balance of speed and control.
